Spring Training could not have started out any differently for the North and South Siders. The White Sox jumped out to an early 4-1-1 record with big victories over the Padres and Angels. They have thus cooled to 6-6-1, including a loss to the Cubs. On the other hand, the Cubs started out 1-5, failing to boast with their new talent. They soon rebounded so far as clawing back 3-8-1 record but still have been getting dominated early on in the game.

The White Sox may be off to good impressions, but the final 25 man lineup is far from finished. In a shocking move, first baseman Adam Laroche announced his retirement from the league at the age of 36. He was still owed $13 million dollars and had one year left on his deal. He was not suffering from any injuries except a few back spasms. He later announced that he decided to retire because the Sox would not allow his son, Drake, into the clubhouse anymore. The $13 million he was owed, now goes back into the salary cap, and rumors are that the Sox are going to target Justin Morneau as Laroche’s replacement. The Sox have also been linked to Jay Bruce and the Cincinnati Reds, but that would involve trading away a top prospect. Newcomers such as Jimmy Rollins and Austin Jackson have provided instant offense and the catcher rotation of Alex Avila and Donnier Navarro has had great chemistry already. One last note on the Sox, it appears top prospect, Carson Fulmer,  will not make the opening day lineup and will be sent to AA(Second Highest Minor League).

The Cubs have already got their lineup set, but it has not been a success early on. Most recently they released reliever Rex Brothers who was acquired this year. It appears they are trying to shake things up. John Lackey has an ERA of 5.3 already in the Spring and John Madden does not even have a reaction. Although the managers laid back style worked last year, it might catch up to them this year. Jason Heyward is a lone bright spot for the team early on as their new superstar has taken the pressure very well slashing a .312 so far. To no surprise Arrieta has been named the opening day starter, and the high priced Jon Lester will be second in the crowded rotation. With six outfielders already signed to major league contracts, it appears that the Cubs might have to trade one. They could target a team like the Yankees who have a strong bullpen for a strength for strength type of trade. The Cubs have all the potential in the world, and all eyes will be on them to raise the World Series Banner!
