The newest film of the Star Wars franchise is now in theaters.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first film of the Anthology Series, three films that, while set in the Star Wars universe, are not part of the main episodic saga. The films are also stand-alone, so they will not have a sequel or prequel and are meant to elaborate on previously-known details from previous films, so there is no need for one.

Rogue One is set immediately before the original Star Wars, nineteen years after the formation of the Galactic Empire. In the film, the fledgling Rebel Alliance learns about the construction of the Empire’s famous super weapon, the Death Star, and that it is nearing completion. Wanting to destroy the symbol of fear and tyranny, the Alliance devises a plan to steal a copy of the Death Star’s schematics and, using them, finds a weakness that could destroy the battle station.

Felicity Jones stars in the film as the lead character Jyn Erso, whom the Rebels recruit to participate in the mission. Diego Luna stars alongside Jones as Cassian Andor, a Rebel intelligence officer. Alan Tudyk is also in the film portraying K-2SO, an Imperial-built droid reprogrammed to serve the Rebels. Starring opposite of them is Ben Mendelsohn, who portrays Orson Krennic, an Imperial officer specialized in experimental weapons, the Death Star included.

Several previously-known characters and/or actors are making returns in the film as well. Forest Whitaker is portraying Saw Guerra, a member of the Rebel Alliance who was first seen in a four-episode arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, set two decades before the events of Rogue One. Genevieve O’Riley, who portrayed galactic senator Mon Mothma in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, is reprising her role, as is Jimmy Smits, who portrayed senator Bail Organa in Revenge of the Sith. Both characters are leaders of the Rebel Alliance. Darth Vader is also appearing in the film, with James Earl Jones once again providing the voice of the dreaded Sith Lord. In addition to Vader, the Death Star’s commanding officer, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, is making an appearance. Peter Cushing, Tarkin’s original actor who died in 1994, will be resurrected via CGI to portray the character.

Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this movie is widely anticipated. Fandango crashed only ten minutes after pre-tickets sales began. Within twenty-four hours, the film had the second-highest ever amount of pre-ticket sales sold, only behind The Force Awakens. The opening weekend gross is expected to be $100 – 150 million. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating of 84%, and the site’s consensus reads “Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground – and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise.”
