Mother! movie review: the most divisive film of the year

Written by Sarayah Villasenor, Staff Writer

From Black Swan to Noah, director Darren Aronofsky has a knack for making controversial films. His most recent and, as many claim, his most controversial movie Mother! dropped on September 15.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence as “mother,” Javier Bardem as “Him,” Ed Harris as “man,” and Michelle Pfeiffer as “woman,” Mother! is about the strains placed on a couple’s marriage when their peaceful existence is disrupted by unwanted house guests. Labeled as a psychological thriller, this allegorical movie has stirred up quite the controversy among many viewers.

One watch of Mother! won’t be enough if you plan on picking up on the heavy symbolism and the allegorical storyline. Aronofsky and the cast have decided to keep tight lipped regarding what the movie actually means, though Lawrence has told the media that Mother! depicts the infiltration of Mother Earth by humanity.

Full of Biblical symbolism, complex characters, and intense scenes, Mother! is a must see for anyone who can stomach it.
