Jigsaw, the latest addition to the Saw franchise, was amazing. As a given, I must talk about the gore and traps. The gore was extremely realistic. Instead of it looking like someone threw cauliflower inside a prop head and dyed it red calling it a brain, the organs looked real.

One of the first scenes is a great example. During the autopsy of the first victim, you see what happens to him. Not only is this scene scary, but it also looks extremely realistic.  I think the traps are new to the series as well, but I haven’t seen the first six to know.

The story is great. It has a combination of the originals with a combination of a mystery movie. Both have about equal screen time. Even though I was looking forward to the scenes with traps, the mystery aspect is nicely combined into it.

The characters in this movie are another thing that keeps the audience interested. Tobin Bell comes back as the Jigsaw killer, which was badly needed for this film. All the characters involved in the game are also great. My favorite character was Paul Braunstein’s character Ryan, who likes to cheat on his wife, evade taxes, and takes shortcuts in life. He has the most character of the five victims, has a sense of humor, and is the most relatable character in the movie. The other characters are Laura Vandervoort as Anna, Mandela Van Peebles as Mitch, and Brittany Allen as Carly.

All of these characters are involved in the Saw game and all have secrets. The people involved in finding out who is killing the victims are Matt Passmore as Logan Nelson, Callum Keith Rennie as Detective Halloran, Cle Bennett as Detective Keith Hunt, and Hannah Emily Anderson as Eleanor Bonneville. They mainly focus on Passmore’s and Anderson’s characters though.

This movie is very good, and I would recommend it to any avid horror fan. Jigsaw gets a 4 out of 4 not only because of the good character development, but also because of the constant presence of fear.

This movie doesn’t rely on jump scares to scare you; it uses the constant panic of traps around every corner and the idea that anyone can be kidnapped by Jigsaw. I believe these are the reason it is so terrifying. The realistic gore and the horrifying scenes will give me nightmares for sure.
