2018 Winter Olympics Highlights

Pyeongchang County, South Korea, hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. From February 9th to 25th, athletes competed for the chance of an Olympic gold medal. Red Gerard, who is 17 years old, was the first person to win gold for team USA. Gerard competed in the men’s slopestyle snowboarding.
There were American athletes that have made history such as Mirai Nagasu, 24, who was the first American woman to land a triple axel in the Olympics. According to the New York Times, there have only been a total of 8 women to land a triple axel in different competitions and the Olympics. Mirai won the bronze medal in figure skating.
Chloe Kim, 17, who competed in the women’s halfpipe competition, was the first woman “to land back-to-back 1080s” according to NBC. A back-to-back 1080 is a complicated trick that includes three 360 degree mid-air spins, and the trick won Chloe Kim gold for team USA.
As of February 17th, the US has claimed 9 medals.
