2023 was certainly an odd year in the movie world. The SAG AFTRA strike interrupted the schedule for many films, some of which may come to mind are Deadpool 3, Mufasa: The Lion King, Wicked, and Beetlejuice 2. However, the films that did come out in 2023 did pretty well. Here’s a list of the Top 10 Box Office Movies of 2023 and their overall grossing.  

Barbie  

I’m sure that many of you were expecting this movie to be high on the list, as it took the world by storm. This movie grossed a whopping $1,445,630,407 globally. The song “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa was number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was accompanied by a few other songs from the film’s soundtrack. This movie had everyone wearing pink for the summer. Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken made for a near perfect on-screen duo.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

This movie had Millennials in their feels, as this nostalgic movie premiered in April. The movie grossed $1,361,939,570 worldwide and $574,934,330 in the US. The song “Peaches” became a widely popular TikTok audio. With Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, the two make for an iconic and comedic duo. This movie is great for all ages, especially families. 

Oppenheimer 

Oppenheimer is an action-packed and thrilling film. It made a colossal $952,039,870 worldwide. Oppenheimer is based on the true story of the development of the atomic bomb. With a slew of familiar and loved actors, it makes for an intriguing and powerful movie. Only a great movie can be educational AND entertaining, and Oppenheimer does just that.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an emotional roller coaster following the backstory of one of the main characters through flashbacks, while also following a brand new plotline. This movie made $845,555,777 worldwide, and it did not disappoint. While still keeping true to the Guardians humor, it also tugged on the audience’s heartstrings.

Fast X

This movie, a part of the Fast and the Furious franchise, is the 10th of the franchise. This movie made $706,454,095 at the box office. The movie features reputable actors such as Vin Diesel, Jason Mamoa, and Brie Larson. The overall plot follows the main character Dom and his journey to help the rest of his professional hacking team in Rome. An overall great action film.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse

The second movie of a series, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse made 690,615,475 dollars in the box office. The movie features actors such as Oscar Isaac, Donland Glover, and Andrew Garfield. It picks up with Miles, the main character, and Gwen, Spider Woman, going on an adventure across the Multiverse and encountering various conflicts along the way.

The Little Mermaid

A live action version of the classic 1989 The Little Mermaid made a whopping 569,626,289 dollars. This adaptation featured the lovely Hallee Bailey as Ariel, accompanied by Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, and Mellisa McCarthy as Ursula. The actors, well casted, portrayed the characters on the big screen with incredible emotion and talent. This movie is a great portrayal of the classic that we know and love.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the 7th film in the Mission: Impossible series. This movie made $568,835,441 at the box office in 2023. With famous actors such as Tom Cruise and Vanessa Kirby, the movie makes for a fantastic action thriller. The overall plot follows Ethan Hunt and his team’s efforts to stop The Entity (an omniscient enemy) from manipulating the truth. It is a great and entertaining movie.

Wonka

Wonka, the prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, made 552,225,218 dollars in the box office in 2023. Featuring the ever popular Timothee Chalamet as the main character, Willy Wonka, and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa, the movie makes for a funny and lighthearted film, with songs that will be stuck in your head and lovable characters it makes for a great film!

Elemental

Elemental is a Pixar movie that celebrates the combining of cultures and bringing people together. This movie made $496,444,308. The movie features two characters, Ember and Wade. Ember is a fire element and Wade is a water element. We meet the two in Element City, where fire is outcasted to the outskirts of the city. The movie features the pair and their adventure to embrace each other and accept the merging of cultures. A great movie for all ages!
