Last week, an annual celebration took place for the Lockport Boys and Girls Water Polo teams, as well as the entire Lockport Township community. On Friday, March 1st, LTHS honored the late Joseph Lewandowski, also known as Coach Lew, at the 4th annual Lew’s Legacy Maroon & White Night. Coach Lew, the head coach of the Lockport Boys Water Polo Team for almost 20 years, was integral to bringing a water polo team to Lockport. He also led them to their first state tournament appearance in school history in 2012. This extended period of success under Coach Lew made him a school legend, as well as a legendary water polo coach to other high school players and coaches in Illinois. On Friday, after the Varsity Girls Water Polo Team played a scrimmage against each other, a ceremony was held to honor Lewandowski. Friends, family, and former players under Lewandowski gave speeches and told stories of him. The night concluded with the Varsity Boys Water Polo Team scrimmaging against each other. The game finished with an 8-7 victory for Team Maroon in overtime. This marked the fourth straight year this night was held to honor the legacy of Coach Lew, and this event continues to become a grand tradition here at Lockport.
