On October 3, Lockport’s Girls Swim and Dive team was victorious against Lincoln Way East. Both varsity and junior varsity clinched the win by over 60 points compared to LWE. The girls performed phenomenally and all contributed to a huge win.
The Varsity Swim team has had a great season throughout with a multitude of fantastic wins. Against LWE, the individual winners for Lockport were Lily Slowik (26), Bella Barrett (26) , Haley Malloy (26), Anna Westberg (26), Ali Kwiatkowski (25) and Ava Peksa (28). In the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke, the team took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The Porters were also in the absence of one of their top performers last night, due to senior Haley Johnson being on a college visit, but that did not affect the hard-working team. In the end, the Varsity Swim team beat LWE 126 to 50.
Not only did the varsity swim team take the win, but so did JV. JV performed very well, with a LTHS JV swimmer winning every JV event except the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Senior Ava Sipek has performed well, winning every event in this meet and every other JV meet. Freshmen Sofia Harmata and Leah Corrigan are also strong contributors for their team. The JV team only has 2 weeks left of their season and Coach Georgia White is looking forward to seeing the girls’ hard work pay off. She states that “they have been putting in the time and effort, so I know we will see some speedy times at the JV conference meet”. In total, the JV team beat LWE 126 to 60 and will be working hard to claim the top place in the conference.
The Varsity Lockport Dive team has been successful all season. Their top performer, Nicki Kuchyt took 1st place in the diving event once again. Head Coach Grant Ferkulak shared how Kuchyt, “has worked incredibly hard throughout the season and the past offseason,” and how “she has improved the quality of her dives as well as the difficulty of her list of dives”. Lyla Zito took 3rd and Keanna Fennessy followed with 4th place, both contributing to the overall team win. Freshman Violet Slowik also contributed to the win by getting first at the JV level.
“The girls have worked very hard throughout the season,” Coach Ferkaluk comments, “it is great to see that work paying off! I am excited to see what the end of the season has in store for them”. It looks like the Swim and Dive team will continue to dominate and grow. The team is looking forward to their sectional and state meets starting soon in November.
