Choosing what to do after high school is a hard decision, but choosing what to do after college might be an even harder one. As a full-grown adult, there are so many options and new responsibilities to deal with in the midst of a job search. Luckily for us though, Joliet Junior College may have just the solution to that.
Hosted yearly in early October, JJC Manufacturing Day is a trades and STEM career exploration day hosted in the JJC event center. Several schools from Will County attend this event, allowing their students to make connections with trades schools, secure internships, and communicate with large companies that they otherwise would not be able to.
Once students arrive, they are sorted into one of five groups. Then they rotate through the stations in the event center. The first group plays a jeopardy style game, sorted into three teams. Each group chooses a leader, who will stand in front of the podium with a buzzer. The leaders are quizzed on different work related questions.
After this, the group will rotate through three different stations of booths with companies hoping to interest the students in working for them after college or offer internships after highschool. Then, students will receive a complimentary meal catered from Portillos on behalf of JJC.
This event lasts most of the school day, with students leaving East Campus at 8:30 and coming back in the middle of 6th period. The best part is because this is a school sponsored event, it is completely free of charge! There’s never a shortage of companies or students hoping to meet each other every year.
If you’re hoping to sign up, don’t worry because it’s quite simple. If you have expressed interest in STEM in your class schedule or through schoolinks surveys, you’ll be contacted by your counselor regarding the trip. Then, students will attend a meeting during COMPASS to discuss information about the trip, where they will also be given the permission sheet.
There is a limited amount of students that the school can take though, so spots are on a first come first serve basis. If stem is something that you are interested in, attending this event can provide a big boost in a future career!
