TikTok has gotten very popular over the last few years ranging from dancing to storytimes and the viral ‘get ready with me’ trend. Many teens spend hours on this app daily with fear of it getting banned. There has been talk about TikTok getting banned in years prior, but it was only ever a theory. This time, there is an actual date set: January 19, 2025. On April 24, 2024, a bill was signed into law stating that if the app was not sold to a US-based company by January 19th, it would be banned from the U.S because of potential national security issues. Thankfully, there are potential buyers in the United States, but first, the ban needs to be delayed.
TikTok is currently owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, who will try to delay the ban in the Supreme Court later this week. Potential buyers, Kevin O’Leary, known as Mr. Wonderful on Shark Tank, and Frank McCourt plan to join together to buy out the app. McCourt and his team have been working on a project that would allow users to manage their own data eliminating any threat on National Security.
Once President Trump takes office on January 20, Greta Cross form USA Today stated, even though he has attempted to ban the app before, he has recently stated that it has a ‘warm spot’ in his heart. He plans to try and save this app by working with O’Leary and McCourt. Although he has other plans, the beloved app may be banned before he takes office depending on the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, January 9.
