This MLB off-season saw several significant deals. At the beginning of the offseason one of the best players available, Juan Soto, signed a record breaking deal of 765 million dollars with the New York Mets. This was a surprise for most, considering they are cross town rivals to his previous team the New York Yankees.
Arguably the biggest international signing was Roki Sasaki, a Japanese pitcher. Almost every team in the league tried to sign him, with his favorite teams being the Cubs and Dodgers because they have a strong Japanese relationship with their other international players. Sasaki ended up signing with the Dodgers for 6 years. With the Dodgers securing one of the best available pitchers, it helps increase their chances of making the World Series again and making them an even greater threat.
Because the Cubs couldn’t get Sasaki, they decided to trade for Kyle Tucker, a player who could help fill in for the recently traded Cody Bellinger. The Cubs gave up Cam Smith, Hayden Wesneski, their 2024 first round pick, and Isaac Parades, a player they received in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last season. This was a controversial trade, because Kyle Tucker’s contract only has one year left, meaning there is no guarantee that he will play for Chicago next season.
The last offseason move that has happened so far was the resigning of Pete Alonso. He signed for 54 million for 2 years. Alonso resigning with the Mets was a surprise for many.
Finally, the last big name player that has yet to reach a contract with a team is Vlad Guerro Jr, 1st baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays. It is being reported that he is likely to resign with the Blue Jays; however, there is nothing official yet.
To sum up the 2025 offseason, there were many major deals that were put out there. Along with many minor deals that could help teams make a big push to be better this season.
