On February 23, LTHS Vocal Point took first place at their quarterfinal in Skokie, IL after months of hard work, with senior Sophia Melody winning an award for best soloist. The following weekend, Off the Record won first place at their quarterfinal as well, allowing both groups to advance to semifinals.
At semifinals on March 15 in Milwaukee, LTHS swept the competition, with Vocal Point winning first place and Off the Record winning second. LTHS students also won every individual award. Vocal Point will be advancing to finals in New York City, while Off the Record students worked hard over spring break for a chance to win the coveted wild card spot. If they win this video competition, they will also advance to finals.
These two acapella groups consist of some of the school’s most talented vocalists. Vocal Point is an all-female group, consisting of sopranos and altos, while Off the Record includes boys as well. These vocalists are chosen by the LTHS choir program through a rigorous audition process and adhere to a diligent rehearsal schedule. The week before their respective competitions was especially stressful, but the students’ hard work paid off.
The acapella performances include contemporary songs that match well with their precise choral vocals. Vocal Point’s performance is themed after water, and the highlight of their performance is their powerful rendition of “My Immortal” by Evanescence.
Off the Record tells a dark love story through their performance, with their dark costumes in contrast to the sharp red of a rose. Their haunting rendition of Billie Eilish and Khalid’s “isn’t it lovely” keeps their audience captivated, as was made apparent in the teacher performance, an exclusive staff preview of the competitive choir and theater productions, on Thursday, March 6.
In late April, LTHS acapella will be competing in New York City at nationals. Both groups have had an excellent season, and greatly deserved every award and accomplishment they have received!
