With Mother’s Day around the corner, finding an ideal gift could be stressful. As spring approaches, a classic gift for a mom could be picked from the variety of flowers and vegetables that blossom. With Lockport’s Annual Spring Plant Sale coming up, discovering the perfect gift might not be so hard after all.
Whether you’re looking to gift a mother, relative, a friend, or even yourself, consider stopping by at the Mother’s Day Annual Spring Sale organized by the horticulture classes here at Lockport Township High School.
The soft opening is on Wednesday May 7 from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. for staff and students. This is located in the East Campus greenhouse. On Thursday May 8 and Friday May 9 from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., it will be officially open to the entire community. The last day of the sale will be on Saturday May 9 from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
With hundreds of different plants, this sale embraces a multitude of unique plants including hanging baskets, annuals, pollinators, succulents, cacti, and over 20 different types of vegetables and herbs.
Every year, residents from all over the area come to purchase and support the horticulture department at Lockport. The profit earned from this sale serves as the greenhouse’s biggest funding source, supplying the horticulture classes with an amplified window of chances for improvement.
One of the greatest perks of these funds is that they “directly benefit our horticulture students, allowing fresh flowers to be given to them to enjoy throughout the year” according to Colleen Martin, the head teacher of the horticulture classes. “I absolutely love teaching horticulture. I have been teaching at LTHS for 8 years and we are fortunate to have a beautiful college level greenhouse.”
This sale is the perfect opportunity to elevate your yard and even create a garden if interested. Likewise, for any incoming juniors and seniors who enjoy planting, crafting unique flower bouquets, learning about flower anatomy and monarch butterflies, or even designing your own garden, consider taking Horticulture, a fun dual credit science course for students who attend LTHS.
The horticulture classes provide excellent opportunities including college credit, countless community service hours, employment experience, several occasions for creative freedom, landscaping experience, and of course the obvious part: the ability to maintain distinct plants in a greenhouse and in your own yard.
Although horticulture is only for juniors and seniors, everyone is allowed to join the horticulture club every Monday after school for 3:00-4:00 P.M. By the way, there is also a generous option to earn weekly community service hours through this extracurricular.
With that being said, consider stopping by at the upcoming Mother’s Day sale to show the horticulture wing your support, and you can even ask questions about horticulture classes while you are there and how to get involved with work opportunities in the greenhouse.
As Ms. Martin always says: “We are not just growing plants but learning how to enhance our lives at home.”
