A severe thunderstorm hit the Chicago area on August 18. In the usually calm subdivision of Willow Walk, a Lockport family was wrapping up dinner and enjoying their evening when lightning struck. The bolt struck the back side of their home, causing a fire in their attic, but all four family members were able to evacuate safely.
Once out, the family stood and watched their home as it became engulfed in flames. At the same time, the Fire Department struggled to assist them due to one of the main entrances of the neighborhood being flooded. Eventually, after using another entrance, the Lockport Fire Department reported to the scene. Additionally, eight other surrounding districts assisted in extinguishing the fire or covering other areas.
The fire was put out shortly; however, the family is left temporarily homeless while their home is being repaired due to the extensive water and fire damages. The American Red Cross, a non-profit humanitarian organization who provides emergency assistance and relief, stepped in to assist the displaced family with housing and basic needs.
Both Lockport and the Willow Walk neighborhood displayed a strong sense of community as they came together to help the family and first responders. The debris on top of sewer drains were cleared, so the road became accessible for the necessary fire equipment, food and clothing donations were set up as well and a GoFundMe that was created for their long term needs as they will be displaced for some time.
