On June 20 2025, Netflix released “KPop Demon Hunters,” a film that was not heavily promoted by the studio. Unbeknownst to Netflix, the film would explode in popularity becoming the most-watched original animated film on the platform attracting 184.6 million viewers in just eight weeks. But that begs the question: what is it about this film that is catching people’s attention?
“KPop Demon Hunters” is a musical fantasy film which follows KPop group Huntr/x as they lead double lives as demon hunters facing off against their latest rival, The Saja Boys, a demon boy band.
While the premise is rather simple, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans craft a story that goes far beyond the initial premise with beautiful flawless animation reminiscent of Sony’s Spiderverse films. Every shot could make the audience want to have each one from the film hung on the walls of their bedroom.
Additionally, the film is led by a cast of characters that are well-written with distinct personalities and flaws that make the audience root for both the characters and their progression. From Huntr/x’s determined leader Rumi, to morally gray love interest Jinu, it appears that fans have fallen in love with the characters.
It must be said that “KPop Demon Hunters” has an instantly iconic soundtrack that has people watching for the soundtrack alone. The soundtrack is heavily based in KPop with a musical theater writing style. The songs support the story of the movie, but simultaneously stand on their own as radio hits. The film’s most popular song “Golden” serves as the catalyst for the plot while being catchy and highlights the talent of the vocalists.
The success of KPop Demon Hunters” is inspirational to see considering the lack of media attention before its release. The success of this film emphasizes how general audiences enjoy original media instead of the tired sequels and remakes.
