College is not only a transition into adulthood, but a transition into becoming a responsible adult. As an adult, budgeting is a top priority. In the event you find budgeting to be difficult here are a few easy tips to keep you out of debt and in the black.
- Buy what you can afford.
In this case, keep to your budget plan. If your plan is to keep a low budget, then look for sales, cheap options that are in your price range: cheap t-shirts, hoodies, blue jeans.
- Stick to the meal plan.
Don’t go out for food too often. Use your resources wisely and go to the cafeteria instead, especially if you have a meal plan.

Thrift stores can come in clutch. You can find some steals with a cheap price tag.
- PB&J goes a long way.
PB&J is a quick, delicious on-the-go snack.
- As much as you think you need, double it.
When in doubt, get extra JUST IN CASE. With this tip it could range anywhere from doubling up on toilet paper to doubling up on granola bars.
- Build credit.
By this we mean pay with a credit card. Paying back the credit each month will help a lot in the future. However watch how much you spend because damaging your credit can also ruin your future
- Starbucks = $Star BUCKS! baby.
Do you really need to pay $4 for that coffee? Go make your own.
- Ramen is your best friend.
There’s nothing wrong with eating Ramen often. It saves a lot of money and it’s easy to make!
- Save money on textbooks.
Textbooks are becoming very expensive these days. Try finding used and digital books that could save you an arm and a leg thriftbooks.com and bookfinder.com.
- Walk to class.
Walking can get you some exercise and its the cheapest thing you can do for transportation.
- Apply for more scholarships.
Keep an eye out for more scholarships throughout college. Try to come out of college with the least amount of student loans possible.
