Earlier this year, the city of Lockport released major news, sure to excite sports fans in the area. The Lockport City Council recently approved the construction of a new ice arena for the town. This arena, named the Summit Ice Center, has been approved to be built on a 12 acre plot of land on Prime Boulevard in Lockport, just north of the Bo Jackson Elite Sports Dome.
Features of the new 71,000 square foot arena include two NHL regulation size ice rinks, a full weight room, training areas, concessions, a sports bar, and more. A second 41,000 square foot facility is set to include off-ice skill training. There are also public sidewalks surrounding the facilities and a pedestrian crosswalk connecting to the Veterans Memorial Trail.
The most noticeable feature of this new facility will be the large hockey stick and puck displayed in the front of the building. Standing at a height of 250 feet, this stick will break the world record for the largest hockey stick in the world, surpassing the current record holder, a 218 foot hockey stick in British Columbia, Canada. The opening date is still unknown, but Summit Ice Center is sure to bring fun times to the Lockport area.
