As Homecoming season comes to an end, students express their frustration for the themes this past year. At Lockport Township Highschool, students celebrate homecoming with a week full of events leading up to the big dance.
This includes themed spirit days, class competitions where freshmen face off against sophomores and juniors battle seniors, a pep rally packed with games, a parade, and tons of school spirit.
“When I think of Homecoming, I think of the Powderpuff game and the football game on Friday,” shared Katie McNulty, sophomore at LTHS. The Powderpuff game is a class favorite, where girls play flag football and the boys participate in poms. It’s a fun addition that many students look forward to each year.
However, over the past few years, the homecoming themes and spirit days have started to feel unoriginal. “Neon Day” and “USA Day” show up almost every year, and while they are fun, they no longer feel special and exciting.
Students often do not like to participate in the recurring themes due to the fact that they have shown up in the other spirit days throughout the year. “The themes of the dress up days should be more available for people to wear in their closet,” shares Sophia DalPonte.
Although coming up with new themes every year may not be easy, it’s definitely worth the effort. Unique and exciting themes can create more participation and excitement, especially for students who might not normally get involved.
The team responsible for choosing homecoming themes could explore ideas from nearby schools or search up theme suggestions online. New themes can also bring new ideas, creativity, new decorations, and outfits each year! Most importantly, it will create memories that will last a lifetime!
