Hungry? Want to grab a bite to eat? There’s an app for that! Need to do some last minute shopping? There’s an app for that! Want to check your score from your recent test? There’s an app for that! Are you bored and want to play a game? Well guess what? You guessed it, there’s an app for that, too! I think you get the picture. Nowadays it seems wherever you go and whatever you do, there is always an online service that comes along with that activity. There are in fact, many benefits that come along with all these services. Yet, sometimes all these apps can become too much to handle and feel like they are taking over our lives.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the convenience that these apps bring to our world. They definitely help you save time and energy. With a click of your finger or a swipe of your thumb, you can be instantly gratified through these wonderfully made technological software applications. If our ancestors could only see us now, oh how in awe they would be. Although we benefit from these apps, have you ever stopped to think about how much technology has taken over our lives? Humans have become so dependent on technology that we would feel helpless without it.
Sometimes technology, although useful and highly praised, can pull you away from the beautiful simplicities of life itself. For instance, Uber Eats may arrive at your door in ten minutes flat, but you are missing out on the entire experience of eating in the restaurant. And what about the feeling of flipping through the fresh pages of a new book versus straining your eyes while reading on a screen? Sometimes sipping your coffee while browsing the aisles at Target just hits differently than doing a quick online purchase and delivery. Likewise, facetime with your friends is all fun, but I’d much rather catch up in person. After the Covid-19 years, we can all agree on how much more enjoyable it is to have human interaction.
Long story short, sometimes quick and easy isn’t always best. So, the next time you feel like your phone is overflowing with apps and technology is taking over your life, maybe it’s time to stop, put the phone down, and take a break. Instead, grab your friends, go outside, and make some memories together. Life is meant to be lived, and there isn’t an app for that.
