When current president Joe Biden first launched his campaign for the 2020 election, he was competing directly with his predecessor, Donald Trump. One of the Republican party’s primary battles was constructing a wall along the border of America and Mexico, an endeavor that Biden promised to put a stop to. His vehement opposition was a large factor in landing him in office, but now that he’s been sitting there for two years, the ideals are starting to crumble.
The war for the wall has been debated over and over, often to no real change. It’s transformed from a real issue into a moral question of where a politician’s empathy falls. This cannonball has been shot continuously at the former president and his followers, with protesters calling for action for the refugees treated inhumanely. It’s considered proof of Donald Trump’s lack of concern, and it’s part of the reason he’s been impeached. Sound reasoning, but it begins to fall apart as Biden approves further construction on the wall for a twenty mile stretch. The “woke” groups that condemned Trump are silent, and coverage for this decision is nonexistent. After this long battle, perhaps the fight wasn’t about justice for immigrants, but for political correctness.
Biden’s administration has announced that the decision was one made for them by legal processes. The money for the wall’s construction was already allocated, they say, so there’s nothing to be done but to use it.
However, this ignores the second choice that the administration had: to simply not spend the money. Hardly any taxpayers were thinking about it anymore, and the reality is that if the money had gone unused, no one would have noticed. Biden might find this financial neglect to be unacceptable, but is it not worse to go through with a plan to persecute our southern neighbors?
Under Biden’s approval, twenty more miles of the border will be guarded like a prison. Refugees seeking the land of the free will be met with hostility and hatred. Was the purpose of Biden’s election not to end injustices like this? The outrage from the left is deafeningly silent.
