As winter sports are coming to an end at Lockport, it’s important to acknowledge all the good work each team has done this year. However, one that deserves recognition is the girls wrestling team. Although they have faced setbacks such as injuries, being snowed in, sub-zero temperatures, prejudice, and discrimination, they have overcome it all in order to simply do the sport they fell in love with. A prime example is when they traveled to Oak Forest at 6 in the morning for what was supposed to be a normal Saturday tournament. However it turned into a 13 hour ordeal due to the fact they had to wait until the guys had finished for them to start and to top it off there was no athletic trainer. The team started off the season with almost 40 athletes but have ended with just 14 actively practicing and even less competing. The girls remaining have bonded and are close friends in and out of practice. Some of their most recent accomplishments include 2 first place wins at regionals, 2 second place finishers at regionals, and 5 overall sectional qualifiers. Girls Wrestling can offer so many things to athletes like confidence, friends, and perseverance. It can also keep girls in shape and give them a sense of responsibility. As an athlete on this team, I’m proud of how far we have come since the beginning of the season and of how far we can go.
