Michael Cera Ad
A consumer is more likely to become a supporter of a company when the organization is able to be self-conscious and point out a criticism or flaw of their advertisements. Cera-ve always presents a model with perfect skin to frame their product as a miracle working agent that can transform the unhealthiest of skin to its youthful appearance. This year for their Super Bowlad they could have shown Margot Robbie using their product to increase the products seemingly otherworldly powers of making anyone beautiful, but instead I think they chose the Barbie star. Choosing Micheal Cera, combined with tongue and cheek wordplay of their own branding, and the ability to point out their ads’ cheesiness and over-amplification of beauty standards, allowed Cera-Ve to make its image far more relatable to the general public.
Jeff Goldblum Aliens
Apartments.com (ft. Jeff Goldblum) Super Bowl LVIII (58) 2024 Commercial
Apartments.com sounds like the most boring and run of the mill app anyone could own; in spite of this, the company has made it their goal to stick out in their ads. To start, they hired the most eccentric personality in Hollywood to be the face of their company, Jeff Goldblum. In this year’s version of their Super Bowl ad, they decided to have Jeff Goldblum emulate his role in the Jurassic Park franchise and talk to giant CGI aliens for a Super Bowl ad. How is this a realtor app again? Apartments.com’s commitment to creativity and outlandish concepts makes their app sound interesting and new, even if it is just an app for renting an apartment.
Tom Brady MGM Grand Ad
BetMGM Big Game Commercial – ‘Tom Has Won Enough’
With the Super Bowl being held in Las Vegas, there was prime real estate for betting companies to convince the common patron to pick up the harmless hobby of gambling. MGM took center stage; however, using the poster boy of winning, Tom Brady, to prove anyone could win at MGM. The ad’s lighthearted tone makes the viewer feel that the seemingly repulsive act of wasting your own money through gambling is a fun hobby, with a near guarantee that you will win. The corporation successfully relays the message that “Nothing says Vegas like MGM!” even if a slight gambling addiction stems from it.
Google Ad
Javier in Frame | Google Pixel SB Commercial 2024
Within all the absurdity of needless product placement and irrelevant celebrities vying for their spot to stay in Hollywood, Google consistently produces moving and emotionally provoking ads. In this year’s ad Google presents a new feature of their Google Pixel, a camera more accessible for the visually impaired. Google again attempts to market their product through a heavy load of emotional weight, telling another seemingly real person’s life story in snapshots. The visually impaired man in the ad is seen falling in love, getting married, and even having a child, moments he would not be able to capture without the help of Google’s accessible camera. The consumer feels that buying a Google product will always allow their money to go to a good cause in order to make others lives better.
Aubrey Plaza Mountain Dew
MTN DEW | Aubrey Plaza Having a Blast Super Bowl Ad
Although this ad almost falls under the umbrella of a needless celebrity cash grab, it successfully evades the stigma entirely. When Aubrey Plaza presents the product she doesn’t say “Hi Im Aubrey Plaza super famous movie star”, but instead just calls herself America’s Sweetheart. Even when Nick Offerman comes into the ad he doesn’t need to state his name for the world to hear. As a result, the audience picks up two characters from a beloved tv series, Parks and Recreation, instead of two celebrities vying to stay in the public eye.
