With the Oscars right around the corner here are The Press’s predictions for the winners:
Best Picture: Oppenheimer
- Easily the highlight of the year in cinema was the viral buildup toward the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, more affectionately referred to as Barbenheimer. Although Barbie might have taken the gold home for box office profit, Oppenheimer was raved by critics and audiences alike. Oppenheimer has taken home the award for best picture at every award show leading up to the Oscars, and I believe it is guaranteed to win the show’s biggest award.
Best Actor: Paul Giamanti- The Holdovers
- In yet another year for career revivals, Paul Giamanti took center stage as a disgruntled and slightly alcoholic boarding school teacher who is despised by many of his students. He plays a sympathetic side of a character that could easily have been one note and stagnant. Giamanti’s masterful performance is what allows the end of the movie to provide such an emotional release from the audience. Although Cillian Murphy is expected to win the award, I think Paul Giamanti will take it home. Brendan Fraiser had a career revival through The Whale last year and won the award, and I think Giamanti’s journey to revival will end in success for him as well.
Best Actress: Sandra Huller- Anatomy of a Fall
- In one of many foreign language films up this year for best picture, Sandra Huller stood out in the extremely chilling Anatomy of a Fall. Many people believe that most dramatic performances are the ones deserving of Oscars, the more crying and screaming, the better. However, subdued performances go overlooked for their nuance and importance in a movie. Sandra Huller replaces overdramatic antics with a quiet and chilling performance that leaves the audience wondering what her character was truly capable of.
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr.- Oppenheimer
Many of the superstars involved in the Marvel franchise have not been able to escape the stigma that they will always be known as the characters that they are from the MCU. However, Robert Downey Jr., often only seen as Iron Man, broke his own preconceived notions in his role in Oppenheimer. He took center stage in the latter half of the film revealing himself as a faithless leech towards Cillian Murphy as the titular Robert J. Oppenheimer. He emphasized how many of Oppenheimer’s colleagues later in his life turned his back on him to save themselves and their reputations. Downey portrays a jealous and power-hungry man who attempted to shift the blame of the release of classified documents on one man instead of a probable spy. He won the award at the Golden Globes, and should receive the highest recognition at the Oscars’ as well.
