Let’s face it: School is stressful for both staff and students. Between work, school, and a social life, it can be overwhelming to attempt to balance it all. A potential solution for schools to reduce stress for all would be to integrate therapy dogs into the school resources. A study from the National Institute of Health showed that a dog in a classroom even just once a month can boost moods, reduce stress by considerable levels, improve school attendance, and develop better and stronger relationships between teachers and students. The benefits are numerous and impressive for what seems like such a small difference. The difference between your fluffy companion and the dogs who attend school, is the training. Therapy dogs are somewhere in between a house pet and a service dog in terms of training requirements. Therapy dogs can be trained later in life, but service dogs start from puppyhood. The training is just to ensure the dogs can behave while out and working or in public. Adding therapy dogs to schools will ensure that nobody will have a ruff day!
