The Mid-Way Point in the 2014 NFL Season

This NFL season has definitely been surprising so far.  The Bears and the Bucaneers were projected to be 2 very good teams in the NFL, but that has not been the case.  The Bears have one of the greatest offenses in the NFL, but Jay Cutler has been throwing to Matt Forte more than his Pro Bowl receivers, Marshall and Jeffery.  Also when Cutler throws down the field, he usually throws an interception so it can be very frustrating for Bears fans to watch their team, who was suppose to be playoff bound, play this terrible.  The Bears last losses to the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers were without question, the worst the Bears have played in a long time and they could not stop Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers from coming down the field.  The Buccaneers are another team that has been a surprise so far this NFL season.  Compiling a record of 1-8, their only win was against the Steelers in week 4.  They have lost to many mediocre teams such as the Vikings, Rams and Browns.  With their addition of Mike Evans, Josh McCown and Lovie Smith during the offseason, they were expected to take the next step into becoming a better team.  Doug Martin has also not been playing very good so far this season, so that also might have something to do with their terrible record.  But something just must have went wrong with the chemistry of the team to only be able to pull away win one win so far this season.

There also have been teams who have been playing way better than expected.  The Cowboys were projected to be terrible with their injured defense that gave up the 3rd highest points per game in NFL history last season.  But, this team has corrected their defensive issues by having Demarco Murray, Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense is on the field longer.  Now, the Cowboys record is a solid 7-3 after their win against the Jaguars in London.  This Cowboys team could be up in contention for a Super Bowl if Tony Romo’s back heals correctly and Demarco Murray doesn’t fumble as often as he has in the past.  The Cleveland Browns have been an amazing team this season, even though the have not been playing Johnny Manziel.  Their defense has been good, making up for their terrible offense.  Hoyer hasn’t been throwing interceptions, the run game isn’t bad and Gordon is coming back so it is looking good for the future of their team.  The reason they have been playing good is because they haven’t been incredibly bad in any category in yards per game, or defensive yards per game.  The Browns may make the playoffs, but I don’t know if they will make it passed the first round or two.

This season has been full of surprises, but which teams are projected to win the Super Bowl?  Many teams are up for contention, but common favorites are the Broncos and the Patriots because they have playing outstanding thus far.  The Patriots and the Broncos records are at 7-2 so that is definitely respectible.  Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are nearing the end of their careers, so it would be nice if one of them could go all the way this season.
