For the first time in 39 years on September 9th, LTHS’ marching band won first place in the Lake Park Marching Band Competition. In order to find out what made the band victorious, LTHS senior drum majors Amanda Medina Segura and Olivia Ruffatto, who are conductors for the band, shared their thoughts concerning the historic win.

One major component of why the band was able to triumph was due to the amount of practice that the band undergoes, which can range from “4 days a week at the least, and six at the most,” says Olivia.

In regards to what made this year special in particular, Olivia claims that the band’s “directors have done an awesome job this year at making sure the band is staying focused” so that can maximize their practice time.

According to Amanda the reason why the band is successful is due to an increase in “leadership meetings that could have helped each section communicate more effectively” and the phenomenal work ethics of the band.

Both drum majors agree that they are “really proud of everyone in the band” and all that everyone is doing to make the band “as amazing as it possibly can be right now.”

Whether blazing hot or freezing cold, the LTHS marching band can be seen practicing out at East’s fields after school almost every day, and the results of their practice are clearly shown in their victory at Lake Park.
