If you were to ask anybody that lives in Lockport, I’m sure they would all agree that the recent heat was too much to handle. Well, this is especially true with LTHS students who are present in the Central Campus Building.
As a freshman that has to be in the Central Campus from 7:45 AM til 2:45 PM or longer due to clubs, the lack of air circulation can be concerning. Sure, there is air conditioning, but only in certain rooms and even some of those are breaking down. It’s not just some of the rooms that are overwhelmingly hot, but the hallways are much worse.
Imagine this: you’re on the bottom floor and the bell rings. You have to get to your next class, only your class is all the way up on the top floor and you have four minutes to get there. By the time you’re done crawling up the crowded stairwells and passing through the overpopulated hallways, you’re drenched in sweat. Then you are left with one of two things happening. Either, there is AC and the room becomes an absolute relief, or the room is hot and humid with no cool air passing through. Some people may be comfortable with that, but I for one am not.
The fact that it was so hot in the building to the point where e-learning was an option, isn’t okay. Sure, with e-learning you can stay home without having to deal with the disgusting temperatures, but at what cost? We’ve seen in the past that learning from home on a device isn’t as effective as learning inside of an actual classroom. In other words, it’s a lose, lose situation. You either get an ineffective learning experience or a distracting one that can actually be hazardous to your health.
Now I do understand that Central Campus is an old building, but surely there are ways to fix the air conditioning systems. Either that or replace the system completely. If this were the case, then there would be no troubles when the temperature rises to an uncomfortable heat. Maybe one day this problem will be solved for future porters so that they may have a safer and healthier learning enviroment.
