Lockport Survives Close Game At Aurora West

Written by Brandon Wenzel, Staff Writer

The Lockport boys basketball team rebounded from a 46-52 loss versus conference foe Homewood Flossmoor to win 44-43 at West Aurora on Jan. 23. This was the Porters first win at West Aurora since a 58-50 win during the 2006-2007 season. Head coach Brett Hespell was not lying when he stated that his team had very balanced scoring and a deep bench as no Porter had double digits in the team’s win.

Lockport’s effort got them their ninth win of the season to improve to 9-8 tie the total from all of last season-as the Porters ended up going 9-17 in the 2014-15 campaign.  Coach Hespell believes that the key to the team’s success this season has been its resiliency. The team has used its resiliency to win many close games such as an 81-75 triple overtime win at Lincoln Way North and the West Aurora game.

Although Lockport started the game beating West Aurora 19-12 after the first quarter, the Porters struggled through the second and third quarters as they gave up the lead due to nine turnovers and only 15 points.  Lockport ended up fighting back from a 44-36 in the fourth quarter by going on an 8-0 run finished off by a layup from senior guard Deiondre Taylor.  West Aurora had chances late as they missed a free throw with nine seconds left to tie the game at 44 and missed subsequent putback attempts.

Lockport recently played two more conference games at Lincoln Way East and  at home vs Stagg.  The Porters won 58-46 at Lincoln Way East but lost at home to Stagg 44-50.  This puts the Porters at 10-9 on the year.

The Porters will now be looking ahead to an array of conference games.  These games include multiple games against teams currently ahead of Lockport in the standings.  These last few regular season games will be key to Lockport’s finish in the Southwest Suburban Blue.

What’s next: The Porters look to gain ground in the southwest suburban conference at home against Joliet Central on Friday, February 5th at 7:00 P.M..
