Don’t you get tired of going to the same location for prom year after year? Wouldn’t it be fun to have a change of scenery every once in a while?
Lockport’s Prom takes place at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago every single year. During prom, the museum allows the students access to the exhibits on the first floor, which students typically enjoy. Going to the Museum of Science and Industry for prom has been an ongoing tradition for seven years. The only time it was not held at the museum, besides 2020 due to COVID, was when prom was held at the Pheasant Run Resort in 2018. The only reason that it was not held at the museum was because Lockport was not able to get in contact with the Museum of Science and Industry in time. Ever since then, LTHS has been dedicated to holding prom at the museum every year.
But what if that changed?
Many high schools in the Chicago area hold their prom at a variety of locations, very few schools hold it in the same place every single year. This allows for increased anticipation among the students as to where their prom would be held for their year. Students are excited to get to experience something different.
It can get boring for the students who go to prom every year to keep going to the same place. Prom is supposed to be a “once in a lifetime” event. It’s supposed to be special, and it can be hard for prom to feel special when it is the same thing over and over again.
Students should be able to vote on where they would like to attend prom at the beginning of each school year. This vote has the ability to get students excited about school events again and make them feel like their voice matters. At the very least, if a vote is not possible, then the LTHS staff members who are in charge of prom should think about switching off where prom is held every other year, that way we would still have the Museum of Science and Industry, for those who want to keep the tradition, but then we would also have a new place like the Shedd Aquarium, for those who would like to switch it up.
Prom is about the memories that we make, but the scenery is what makes prom truly magical.
