This year’s Super Bowl, Super Bowl LX, was held in Santa Clara, California, featuring the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. In the weeks leading up to the game, fans were filled with anticipation, convinced the matchup had the potential to be one of the best in recent history. Seattle’s offense had been explosive all year, while New England showed a strong increase in skill which hinted at a thrilling showdown. But when kickoff finally arrived, the game failed to live up to the hype, leaving many fans feeling underwhelmed.
The game ended in a blowout, with the Seahawks winning 29–13 in a contest that was never truly competitive. Seattle controlled the pace from start to finish, while New England failed to score until the fourth quarter. In fact, the first touchdown of the entire game didn’t come until that final quarter, leaving the first 45 minutes filled with field goals only. The lack of scoring sparked from both defenses playing at an exceptional level, consistently shutting down each other’s offense.
Many fans found this year’s Super Bowl underwhelming because the game was so defensively driven. “Out of all Superbowls this one was the hardest to watch, I found it extremely boring due to the lack of offense on both sides of the ball” stated LTHS senior Dylan Mihalik when asked about the game. Viewers often find interest in high‑scoring matchups filled with explosive plays and multiple touchdowns, and this game offered very little of that.
The backlash extended well beyond the game itself this year, as many fans were disappointed with several aspects of the overall presentation. Viewers criticized the commercials, as many appeared to be obviously AI generated and lacked the creativity of traditional commercials with real actors. The halftime show also sparked controversy which has almost turned into an annual thing as people found problems with productions and the music itself.
While this Super Bowl may not earn a spot among the instant classics of recent years, it still delivered plenty of memorable storylines that will stick with fans. In many ways, the backlash the game received shows how high the standard is for sports entertainment in today’s world. With expectations rising each and every season, satisfying fans each year will become more difficult.
