With a 25-5 record and one of the program’s best seasons in the past few years, the Lockport Township High School Boys Basketball team heads into Wednesday’s home playoff opener looking like a group built for a deep postseason run. Their rise has been steady, disciplined and rooted in details that don’t always show up on a scoreboard.

A foundation built on fundamentals
For head coach David Wilson, the Porters’ biggest transformation has come from embracing the details that many teams overlook.
“Fundamentals are boring, and this team has done a nice job embracing the grind,” Wilson said. He pointed to improvements in footwork, spacing, passing and ball handling as the backbone of the team’s growth. That commitment has shaped Lockport’s identity and allowed them to win for multiple reasons throughout the season.
Depth and daily improvement
Lockport’s success hasn’t come from one standout player carrying the load. Instead it has been the product of a roster that practices with purpose and competes with consistency.
“High tide raises all ships,” Wilson said, emphasizing how every player contributes to the team’s momentum. He credited the group’s ability to stack productive practices day after day as a major reason for their strong record.
That depth has given Lockport flexibility throughout the season. They can play fast or slow, big or small, depending on the matchup. It’s also helped them stay fresh late in games and throughout a long season that began with summer workouts and weight room sessions.
Chemistry that shows up in big moments
Guard Nojus Venckus (27) believes the team’s connection off the court has been just as important as their execution on it.

“I think the biggest reason for our team’s success this year has definitely been our team chemistry and how we’ve built strong relationships both on and off the court,” Venckus expressed. “It gives us a sense of trust and support during the game.”
He added that hard work in practice, strong coaching and a roster full of talent have all played key roles in the team’s success.
A playoff run with real meaning
Now, with the postseason finally here the stakes feel different. As the No. 3 seed, the Porters enter the playoffs with both respect and expectation, a position earned through months of improvement and a 25-5 regular season record that showcased their discipline and depth.

For the seniors, this is the result of years of work. For the underclassmen, it’s a chance to help redefine what Lockport basketball can be. A deep playoff run would validate everything they’ve built. It would show that the habits formed in the summer, the discipline developed in practice, and the trust built off the court were all building toward something bigger. For a program working to reestablish itself, the postseason represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Now, the Porters have a chance to turn one of their best seasons in years into something even more memorable.
The regional playoffs take place on Wednesday, Feb. 25 and Friday Feb. 27.
